Ticket Prices and Booking Information

One great thing about the Proms however is that most of the tickets are priced very affordably, and for almost all the shows tickets are as cheap as £10. Whilst there are no special student discounts, a selection of seated and standing tickets are reserved for sale at the Royal Albert Hall Box Office on the day of each Proms performance, and if you have the time to queue up for the tickets, they are available for the bargain price of £5, making the BBC Proms some of the most affordable music concerts in London. These cheap £5 standing Prom tickets are one of the key philosophies of the BBC Proms, ensuring that the Proms are affordable and accessible to the general public.

One of the best value tickets we see for this year’s BBC Proms is the Proms Weekend Pass for the first opening weekend. Apart from the opening night of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, there is also a performance by Bryn Terfel with the Welsh National Opera performing Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg, and Placido Domingo’s performance with the Royal Opera House. And all for only £12.50, the price of a Proms weekend pass!

In order to purchase tickets for the Last Night of the Proms, there is a requirement that you have to go “promming” at 5 other Proms events, thus making the Last Night ever so special and exclusive. Held outdoors in Hyde Park, it is one of the biggest group singings you will ever see in your life as the crowd sings along to nationalistic songs like Rule Britannia!

Proms tickets are open for booking on Tuesday, 4th May, and it is pretty much guaranteed that some of the hottest tickets will be sold out within minutes. Tickets will go on sale at 8am on 4th May.

Highlights & Guide to the 2010 BBC Summer Proms

Another summer, another series of BBC Proms to attend! While there is no end to exciting events, festivals, parks to explore, and al fresco dining to do in London during the few short summer months, one of the big highlights every year is the BBC Summer Proms, taking place this year from July to September.
Held in the grand Royal Albert Hall (RAH), you might be tempted to ask yourself why one should spend time indoors during the summer when you could be out having BBQs in the park or enjoying the great outdoors. Indeed, the Royal Albert Hall isn’t very well ventilated either, with the throngs of concertgoers every year facing sweltering conditions inside and finding a second use for their concert programme booklets and guides. However, the BBC Proms is the biggest highlight in the music calendar in London, and even if you are not into the more classical and traditional forms of music it would be a shame to not attend at least one of the world quality concerts and take part in the annual promming ritual!

Top highlights this year
Every year, there is a star-studded cast of celebrity musicians from around the world who perform at the BBC Proms, with these performances being some of the hottest tickets of the year in London. Placido Domingo, a world renowned Spanish tenor, was expected to perform in London just a few months ago at the Royal Opera House, but pulled out at the last minute to undergo surgery for colon cancer. He has made a roaring recovery, and is set to be one of the big highlights of the BBC Proms. He will be headlining Verdi’s opera “Simon Boccanegra”.

Jamie Cullum will be performing his songs on the piano at the BBC Proms as well, and Stephen Fry will make an appearance when he introduces a complete performance of “The Mastersingers of Nuremberg” by Wagner.

Matt Smith, the lead actor in the Docor Who series, will be making an appearance as part of a special Doctor Who Prom night.

Two Last Night of the Proms Performances!
The opening prom will be on the 16th July, with the first night being given over to Mahler’s “Symphony of a Thousand”. The last night will be on the 11th September, with the traditional Last Night of the Proms held outdoors in nearby Hyde Park, just a stone’s throw away from Royal Albert Hall. However, this year for the first time since 1910 there will be two Last Nights, with the traditional one being held on the real last night (11th September), and the other one a re-creation of the Last Night of the Proms in 1910. The traditional one will include the staples such as Rule Britannia, Jerusalem, and Land of Hope and Glory, with star performers Renee Fleming, an American Soprano, and Jonathan Dove, a British composer.

The other Last Night of the Proms, a recreation of the 1910 version, will be a free concert to the public, and will have Wagner’s Flying Dutchman overture, and Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No 4. But you did hear it right; it will be a free entry concert, which doesn’t come around very often.

The Last Night of the Proms, review

Britain’s economy is shot to pieces, our green and pleasant land will soon be covered in white satanic windmills, and we slip relentlessly down the world league in all the measures that matter. But for three hours we could forget all that, because when it comes to having a jolly good knees-up, we are world class. The world agrees, because there it was in the hall, waving its various multi-coloured flags alongside the Union Jacks.
It was all as silly as expected. The chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Jirí Belohlávek, was “shot’’ by Goldie while playing a vacuum cleaner (in Malcolm Arnold’s Grand, Grand overture). That great mezzo Sarah Connolly sang Rule Britannia dressed as an Admiral
Balloons soared aloft, to roars of approval. Poppers exploded.
But this knees-up isn’t as innocent as it seems. Everything has to be carefully weighed up: real music versus fun, regions versus the centre, traditional versus old. Things kicked off with a post-modern fanfare by Oliver Knussen. Then came a pre-modern arrangement of Purcell: that is, a vast romantic one done before “historically informed performance’’ got going .
The fascinating thing about the Last Night is that there are always some moments of real depth. Here they came from Sarah Connolly, who gave lovely, rapt performances of Mahler’s Lieder eines Fahrendes Gesellen and the famous lament from Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas .
Why are they there? Because otherwise the only moments of strong feeling would be the patriotic hymns at the end. And all Prom directors realise in their bones that this would be a bad thing. The American conductor David Robertson – a humanly sensitive man as well as fine conductor – knows that too, which is why he prefaced Land of Hope and Glory with some heartfelt remarks about the orchestra as a symbol of how differing nations can get along. This drew the sting of all those nationalist sentiments, which is why everyone could sing along with a good conscience. As a party the Last Night is pretty good. As a piece of cultural/political manipulation, it’s a masterpiece.

Proms Spectacular (Castle Howard)

Every year, around the middle of August, Castle Howard stages the "Proms Spectacular". The huge stage is erected by the side of the lake, in front of the House, which makes an imposing setting for the event. The idea is to take a picnic, and most people take picnic baskets, chairs, and rugs. Others take tables, candelabras, champagne and smoked salmon. The evening begins with an opera singer, and the main performance this year, was by the English National Orchestra conducted by Jae Alexander, and tenor

Wynne Evans and soprano Sarah Ryan also performed. The programme included: O Sole Mio, and Puccini’s Nessun Dorma, alongside the more traditional flag waving anthems of Jerusalem, Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory.
The main performance began with an aerobatic display by a World War 2 Spitfire, while the orchestra played the theme from 633 Squadron, and the Battle of Britain, and ended with a spectacular fireworks display as they played the 1812 Overture.

BBC Worldwide takes BBC Music content to the big screen for the first time

Select Cineplex Entertainment Theatres nationally to present Proms live in high-definition on Saturday, September 12, 2009

BBC Worldwide Music announces today that the BBC Last Night of the Proms will be broadcast live via satellite from The Royal Albert Hall to cinemas across the world. BBC Worldwide Music is working with partners BY Experience and Cineplex Entertainment in Canada; to allow music lovers to simultaneously experience what is billed as the 'biggest classical music party in the world'.

This is a landmark venture for BBC Music content, presenting one of Britain's most iconic music events on the big screen and in digital surround sound. BBC Last Night of the Proms is traditionally sold as a music programme to international broadcasters and will this year be shown in over fifteen territories around the world including Japan, Germany, Norway and Australia.

"BBC Last Night of the Proms is one of the most popular musical celebrations enjoyed by millions of people and we are delighted to extend the experience live to guests exclusively at our theatres," said Pat Marshall, Vice-President, Communications and Investor Relations, Cineplex Entertainment. "There is no better way to experience some of the world's leading artists than on the big screen and in digital surround sound."

The ethos of the BBC Proms is to make classical music accessible and modern technology is extending this to music fans globally. BY Experience has a wealth of experience in providing arts content to theatre audiences internationally as the company behind the hugely successful The Met: Live in HD and National Theatre NT Live concepts.

The Proms were founded in 1895. The BBC began running them in 1927 and since then the Last Night has become one of the most famous musical events in the world, watched and listened to by millions. The 2009 season, which began on July 17th, consists of 100 concerts and will culminate with a powerful finale on September 12th that will feature leading international artists and an all-embracing musical programme that introduces new works alongside much-loved classics.

Salim Mukaddam, Head of Commercial Affairs at BBC Worldwide Music said "This is the first time BBC Music content will be screened in cinemas around the world and we're excited to take such an amazing concert to global audiences. The Royal Albert Hall holds around 5,250 people but this presentation will allow fans to be part of the experience no matter where they are in the world. Hopefully this will be the first of many theatrical events from BBC Worldwide Music."

In the UK, BBC Last Night of the Proms is also broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. The first half is shown on BBC TWO and the second part on BBC ONE. It is also available via the BBCiPlayer for up to seven days after the broadcast.

Sir David Attenborough to perform at Proms

SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH is to make his performing debut at the Last Night Of The Proms this weekend - playing a floor polisher.
The legendary natural history broadcaster will take part in a performance of Sir Malcolm Arnold's comic work A Grand, Grand Overture, which has parts for floor polisher, three vacuum cleaners and four rifles, as well as a full orchestra.
Accompanying Sir David will be drum and bass musician Goldie on vacuum cleaner while comedian Rory Bremner and journalist Martha Kearney take two of the rifle parts.

As well as Arnold's unusual work, Saturday's concert will also feature the traditional Last Night favourites: Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and Land Of Hope And Glory.

Sir David made a guest appearance as a speaker at the Proms at the family-orientated Darwin Extravaganza For Kids earlier this summer, but Saturday will be his first musical performance.

Goldie also took part in the Darwin Prom, composing a classical work on the theme of evolution called Sine Tempore.

The finale to the 115th Proms season, which began on 17 July, will be broadcast live on Radio 3 and BBC television.

Two tickets sold every second in Proms booking overhaul

Nearly two tickets a second were sold for this year's bbc proms tickets after a new booking system prompted unprecedented demand.

The change to a first come, first served system, in which booking went live online, by phone and in person at 8am yesterday, created a rush that saw 5,000 people queuing online at the peak.

A further 3,872 turned up in person at the Royal Albert Hall and nearly 9,000 more booked by phone.

Six concerts - including the opening night with Mahler's Symphony No 8, the two Doctor Who Proms and Plácido Domingo in the opera Simon Boccanegra - sold out, but standing tickets are always available on the day. Another five concerts were set to sell out today.

In total, 80,011 tickets - 103 every minute - had been sold when the Royal Albert Hall booking office closed last night - 297,500 were sold for the whole of last season. This year's Proms run from July 16 to September 11.

In the past, people who bought the Proms guide got priority booking and sent off a form with a blank cheque, learning later what they had been allocated. A BBC spokeswoman said: "We have made the system fairer... but we'd like to say there are still tickets available for the vast majority of events."

Bryn Terfel in his pomp brings swagger to finale

Majestic in voice, massive in stature, Bryn Terfel effortlessly hijacked the Last Night of the Proms. The only thing ever likely to upstage the mighty Welsh bass-baritone was his own costumes.

Before the concert I did wonder why one of Beethoven’s worst works – the Choral Fantasy for piano (played by a diffident Hélène Grimaud), chorus and orchestra – had been inserted into Terfel’s selection of opera solos.
He was back in concert dress for a beautifully sustained account of Vaughan Williams’s Silent Noon and an overextended, if mellifluous, medley of national songs arranged by Chris Hazell. But then he produced an astonishing bespoke creation – a white suit embroidered back and front with the Welsh dragon – to lead us in Rule, Britannia.

Nothing could compete with that. But Anna Meredith’s new work, called froms , came close. The 30-year-old Scot utilised not only the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Singers and BBC Symphony Chorus in the hall, but (thanks to satellite links) hundreds of other BBC musicians across Britain, who stomped with wild, not-quite-synchronised abandon for an action-packed five minutes. Short, sharp and sassy, froms presented minimalist riffs with maximalist forces. I enjoyed it, though there was bemusement around me.

Otherwise, it was business not quite as usual. We had Henry Wood’s Fanfares, but not his Fantasia on Sea Songs – so no Hornpipe clap-along. But Sir Roger Norrington did give us the traditional encore of Land of Hope and Glory, prefaced with one good joke. “Can you sing with a bit more vibrato, please?” asked the conductor, who caused a minor musicological furore this season by getting his strings to play Elgar without any vibrato at all.

The Proms’ penultimate night was a disappointment. Gianandrea Noseda can be effective in repertoire that suits his Mr Whippy conducting technique. He demonstrated all too clearly on Friday that this repertoire doesn’t include Beethoven’s Choral Symphony. Alhough there were spirited contributions from the BBC Philharmonic and City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus, I cannot recall a Ninth so lacking in understanding or gravitas.

The Last Night of the Proms: it's so good they're doing it twice

It is arguably the most popular classical music concert in the world. So this year the BBC Proms are doing the Last Night twice.
In a tribute to the festival's long history, the Last Night of a century ago is to be re-enacted on September 5. A week later, the official finale to this year's music extravaganza will take place.
The recreation of the 1910 concert, will be free to get in to, marking the start of a new tradition: an annual free Prom. It will include works by Wagner, Beethoven and Dvorak, with rarities such Who Were The Yeomen of England? from Edward German's comic opera of 1902, Merrie England. Jerusalem and Land Of Hope And Glory will be absent, but Rule Britannia will be there.
The event was announced along with details of this year's line-up at the Royal Albert Hall, and the unveiling of Katie Derham as the BBC's face of the Proms.
The official Last Night, on September 11, will see US soprano Renée Fleming lead the singing.
A massive opening weekend is planned. The festival launches on Friday July 16 with Gustav Mahler's Symphony Of A Thousand, which requires 600 musicians and singers, followed on successive days by Bryn Terfel in Wagner's The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, and Plácido Domingo in Verdi's Simon Boccanegra. It will be only Domingo's second Proms appearance, and comes months after the Spanish tenor underwent cancer surgery at the age of 69.
Announcing the line-up today, Proms director Roger Wright said he wanted to acknowledge the history of the festival while making it work for the 21st century: “[Proms founder] Henry Wood believed in making the best-quality classical music available to the widest possible audience, and that remains at the heart of the Proms today.”
Admission prices have been frozen for another year, thanks to the BBC's subsidy of nearly £6 million.

Forget the election. We want the Proms manifesto

Two days to go.  Two days until we know what delights are lined up for those balmy summer nights at the Royal Albert Hall. Two days until the phrase ‘BBC Proms’ in the Telegraph blog tag box begins its gradual rise from 4 point to 8 point to complete dominance of the cultural blogosphere by the time we reach the Last Night on September 11th.
The Proms schedule remains a closely guarded secret until it’s launched by controller Roger Wright on Thursday. It’s something of a miracle that the embargo is so respected. Obviously lots of people at the BBC have access to the plans – and being media folk, well, it’s hard to stop the odd titbit slipping out to friends and colleagues. Perhaps that’s why us presenters only get fed oblique details in the run up. “We’d like you to present on a prom on xxth August” goes the conversation. “Great, what’s in it?”. “A major European Orchestra. Brilliant programme”. “Okay then”. That’s usually pretty much all we are trusted with.  Well, I may exaggerate slightly, but suffice it to say my detailed knowledge at this point encompasses about 2 per cent of the total programme.
Booksellers will have had their copies of the Proms Guide delivered several weeks ago – it’s still always a best seller. And while I saw the Guide on sale in two branches of a smart London bookstore at the weekend (tut tut), most seem to play along with the rules. And rightly so – it’s much more fun when we all discover together. Then there are nearly two weeks to make up our minds about what we want to hear before tickets go on sale on May 4th. At that point lies the adventure of ticket application forms, online bookings, passport photos for Prommers passes. It’s probably not the best week for the Royal Albert Hall’s box office manager.
So what’s going to be in this year’s season ?  Can’t tell you even my 2 per cent I’m afraid. It’s not like I’m Mr Chiles with ITV to fall back on. But we could have a fun 48 hours speculating …

Royal Albert Hall (Intro)

The Royal Albert Hall is an arts venue situated in the Knightsbridge area of the City of Westminster, London, England, best known for holding the annual summer Proms concerts since 1941.
The Royal Albert Hall is one of the UK's most treasured and distinctive buildings, recognisable the world over. Since its opening by Queen Victoria in 1871, the world's leading artists from every kind of performance genre have appeared on its stage.

History:In 1851 the Great Exhibition was held in Hyde Park, London, for which the so-called Crystal Palace was built. The exhibition was a great success and led Prince Albert, the Prince Consort, to propose that a permanent series of facilities be built in the area for the enlightenment of the public. Progress on the scheme was slow and in 1861 Prince Albert died, without having seen his ideas come to fruition. However, a memorial was proposed for Hyde Park, with a Great Hall opposite.Once the remaining funds had been raised, in April 1867 Queen Victoria signed the Royal Charter of the Corporation of the Hall of Arts and Sciences which was to operate the Hall and on 20 May, laid the foundation stone.

The Hall was designed by Captain Francis Fowke and Major-General Henry Y.D. Scott of the Royal Engineers and built by Lucas Brothers. The designers were heavily influenced by ancient amphitheaters, but had also been exposed to the ideas of Gottfried Semper while he was working at the South Kensington Museum. The recently opened Cirque d'Hiver in Paris was seen in the contemporary press as the design to outdo. The Hall was constructed mainly of Fareham Red brick, with terra cotta block decoration made by Gibbs and Canning Limited of Tamworth. The dome on top was made of steel and glazed. There was a trial assembly made of the steel framework of the dome in Manchester, then it was taken apart again and transported down to London via horse and cart. When the time came for the supporting structure to be removed from the dome after re-assembly in situ, only volunteers remained on site in case the structure dropped. It did drop - but only by five-eighths of an inch. The Hall was scheduled to be completed by Christmas Day 1870 and the Queen visited a few days beforehand to inspect. She was reported as saying "It looks like the British Constitution".

The Proms is a popular eight-week summer season of daily classical music concerts and other events held annually at the Albert Hall since moving from the Queens Hall in 1941. The event was founded in 1895, and now each season consists of over 70 concerts in the Albert Hall, in addition to a series of events at other venues across the United Kingdom on the last night.

They will perform their greatest hits under the accompaniment of the symphonic orchestra Il Novecento led by Robert Groslot.

The London Proms 2010

For 100 years The Proms 2010 has been the best known season of classical music in the UK, starting the popular season in July and ending in September. A varied but accessible programme regularly draws huge audiences to the Hyde Park in Kensington, London.

The aim of The Proms has been to mix the popular and familiar with the innovative and fresh and those who love classics and expect to hear some favourite piece might be surprised to discover a new composer.

The Proms '10 at the Hyde Park in London are affordable to anyone. With standing ticket for each Proms concert costing only five pounds, the event is a bargain considering its top international orchestras and soloists. Each Proms concert is an opportunity for the audience to indulge in a real sense of fun for very much less than the price of a cinema ticket.

The Proms in London also includes a series of chamber music concerts at Cadogan Hall along with outdoor events across the country. You are best advised to arrive early to queue for tickets for the biggest stars and be prepared to queue overnight for entrance to the Last Night of the Proms.

Proms at the Albert Hall/ BBC TV/ Radio 3

With 17 separate items, attending the Last Night of the Proms these days is a bit like shopping at Tesco. If you don’t like taramasalata, there’s always four varieties of houmous. Among the spiciest dips on Saturday was the glamorous Alison Balsom playing Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto with a beguiling soft-edged sound, then dazzling in Piazzolla’s Libertango. She could have stolen the show, but the mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly pipped her by appearing in no fewer than four different guises (and costumes): regal in the Lament from Purcell’s Dido; darkly expressive in Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen; smoochy-voiced in Gershwin; then magnificently decked out as Admiral Hornblower, or maybe Captain Pugwash, in Rule, Britannia!

Between all this came two joyous rarities — Oliver Knussen’s thrilling little Flourish with Fireworks and Villa-Lobos’ pulsating Chôros No 10, vibrantly hurled out by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus — and some funny nonentities, such as Ketèlbey’s maudlin 1915 hit In a Monastery Garden and Henry Wood’s hilariously overblown mistreatment of Purcell, New Suite. That wasn’t the evening’s most preposterous item.

last night of proms latest updates

In the early days of the Twinning Association's existence it was clear that a major fund raising event would need to be arranged, ideally one which could be run on an annual basis. As the Association had developed from the Town Council (link to history page) a couple of former Town Councillors, Len Wilkes and Tom Bickley, together with the then Town Clerk, Mike Wilson, approached the Ransome Band to investigate the possibility of a joint event. The end result of their discussions was the "Last Night of the Proms". The inaugural event was held in the Sconce Hills School Hall in 1984 and so was born one of the most popular concerts in Newark’s musical calendar.

It wasn’t long before the success of the "Last Night of the Proms" meant that the school hall was no longer a suitable venue. The only real choice for a larger venue was the Palace Theatre and the concert has been held there ever since.

Experiments have been undertaken with the format. To satisfy demand for tickets a second night was added but after several years the Friday evening was dropped in favour of a Saturday matinee. Unfortunately, this was not a successful move and the 2008 event reverted to two nights.

The Ransome Band, who have changed their sponsors and, therefore, name several times over the period of our partnership have always played a big part in each years concert. However, there has always been variety in the rest of the programme – male voice choirs, solo singers, double acts, school choirs, the Newark Amateur Operatic Society and even a World Champion whistler have all featured over the years.

last night of the proms tickets 2010

Some of the audience wear patriotic T-shirts, others dinner jackets. Union Jacks are waved during Rule Britannia.
Seats for the final night sell out quickly; to get a Last Night of the Proms ticket one must also attend several other Proms in the season. Prom tickets are no more expensive for the Last Night than for other concerts, but many promenaders queue overnight and all day to get a good space.
To accommodate some of the many people who can't get a ticket, a Proms in the Park concert is held in Hyde Park opposite the Royal Albert Hall, the Proms' main venue. A live big-screen links up with the hall for the finale and people usually get into the spirit outside too.

How the last Night of Proms has been hijacked

Accessible, that is, except on one evening. Newspapers last weekend carried an advert from an agency called Sports Exclusive. It offered tickets to the Last Night of the Proms. Televised live to 40 million people worldwide, and enjoyed in the Royal Albert Hall by Prommers who, in many cases, will sleep on the pavements to secure the best spots in the arena, the Last Night is the most famous event in the music calendar. Tickets are like gold-dust. The BBC, which runs the Proms, could probably sell out the hall ten times over.
Sports Exclusive seems to recognise that, to judge from its prices. Recession? What recession? Stalls seats (face value £82.50) are offered for £995. But if you want to sit with nine chums in a grand tier box, the show will cost you £14,995. Mind you, that does include “a three-course supper and wine with your own box waitress”. (Gosh, I hope she’s fresh. How long do they keep her in the box?) What sort of people, in the present climate, can splash out the equivalent of a year’s wage for a supermarket worker on ten concert tickets? It’s a fascinating question, but not half as fascinating as the question of where the tickets come from.
Not the BBC, that’s for sure. The Proms brochure details the elaborate procedures by which the BBC tries to ensure that ordinary music-lovers, rather than fat cats, fill the hall at the Last Night. One way is to buy a season ticket and stand in the arena through the whole summer of concerts — all 76 of them. The second is to buy seats for no fewer than five other Proms. Even then you aren’t guaranteed a Last Night ticket, and you can’t return the other tickets if you don’t get one. And the third way is to enter the Last Night ballot, by which 100 tickets are allocated. But thousands of people go in for that.
The answer is that the Albert Hall ain’t what it seems. Its management has projected a cosy image of it as “the nation’s village hall”: a revered arena that happily houses everything from boxing to ballet to the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance. But this masks an awkward truth. Many of its boxes and hundreds of seats (perhaps a fifth of its seating capacity) are permanently owned by individuals or companies. When the hall was opened in 1871 its seats were flogged off on 999-year leases called debentures. Some are still owned by the same families; others have been sold on. Last year a grand tier box was put up for sale at £1.2 million. It’s big business. And the reason is obvious. Owners can cash in handsomely on events such as the Last Night by flogging their seats.

Superb technique in masterclass(2008)

Many music-lovers like to list Brahms's four symphonies in order of preference, and Shostakovich was no exception.
His favourite was No 4, followed by Nos 2 and 1, with the Third lagging well behind.
So there was a touch of irony in the fact that this was the one chosen as a companion piece to his own Tenth Symphony in last night's concert by the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle.
Quite what made Brahms's Third only a runner-up in Shostakovich's eyes is not specified, any more than I can articulate with convincing logic why my own ordering would, on most days, be Nos 2, 3, 4 and 1 and, on others, a different sequence altogether, but maybe the nature of the interpretation has much to do with it.
For the most part, Rattle's was strong enough to convert even the most hardened sceptic, but there were also aspects that might have sown doubt in confirmed believers.
Bolstered by the Berliners' superb technique and sonority, the overall impression was of opulence fortified by a resonant bass line, firm sinew in the outer movements and terrific clarity of detail. Lyrical lines were liquidly shaped, and the two central movements, even though they were inadequately differentiated in tempo, were impressive for some exquisite, hushed playing.
the music's emotional thrust was of uncommon power, whether in the ruminative resignation of the first movement or in the scherzo's visceral, menacing energy.

last night of the proms reviews

The newest music on offer in the Last Night was the opening scene from Thomas Adès’s 2004 opera, The Tempest, a wonderful, rollicking sea-storm of an overture, its dark waves and undertow magnificently recreated by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by JirÍ Belohlávek.

So, how would the Prommers take to their new maestro? This was Belohlávek’s first Last Night, and it was hardly a baptism by fire. He signed in with the Othello overture by his Czech compatriot, Dvorák. And then he reminded us that The Entry of the Gladiators, that audacious march with which clowns roll and tumble into the big top, was actually written by a pupil of Dvorák, Julius FucÍk. As it raced along, the Prommers at last started bobbing up and down, as an airborne parrot levitated towards the dome, and Belohlávek called for three cheers for Sir Malcolm Sargent.

The warm and decorous cries of “Hip, hip hooray!” epitomised the unusually gentle, olde-worlde, home-sweet-homeliness of this Last Night. The Prommers didn’t bait Belohlávek, and he didn’t bait them. His speech was a disarmingly diffident and dignified eulogy of the Prommers own “profound and passionate love for this wonderful event”, garnished with gentlemanly greetings to those cities linked by big screen to the Albert Hall. These links provided one of the evening’s real coups: the echoing responses from buglers far and wide to the bugle calls at the start of Henry Wood’s Fantasia on British Sea-Songs. And – to reassure everyone that this really was a party - the soprano Anna Netrebko, who had held a hushed auditorium in the palm of her hand for the closing scene from Bellini’s La Sonnambula, sang, danced, and scattered red roses throughout her aria Meine Lippen sie küssen so heiss from Léhar’s Giuditta.

And, of course, Elgar. Not only Pomp and Circumstance, but a moving vignette from the First World War, in the first Proms performance of The Fourth of August from The Spirit of England, magnificently sung by the tenor Andrew Kennedy with the BBC Symphony Chorus.

The event takes place annually throughout August, as part of the wider Edinburgh Festival. For Edinburgh Military Tattoo tickets, sports tickets, opera-ballet tickets, concert tickets, theatre tickets and exclusive event tickets in the UK and worldwide.
