The Last Night of the Proms: it's so good they're doing it twice

It is arguably the most popular classical music concert in the world. So this year the BBC Proms are doing the Last Night twice.

In a tribute to the festival's long history, the Last Night of a century ago is to be re-enacted on September 5. A week later, the official finale to this year's music extravaganza will take place.

The recreation of the 1910 concert, will be free to get in to, marking the start of a new tradition: an annual free Prom. It will include works by Wagner, Beethoven and Dvorak, with rarities such Who Were The Yeomen of England? from Edward German's comic opera of 1902, Merrie England. Jerusalem and Land Of Hope And Glory will be absent, but Rule Britannia will be there.

The event was announced along with details of this year's line-up at the Royal Albert Hall, and the unveiling of Katie Derham as the BBC's face of the Proms.

The official Last Night, on September 11, will see US soprano Renée Fleming lead the singing.

A massive opening weekend is planned. The festival launches on Friday July 16 with Gustav Mahler's Symphony Of A Thousand, which requires 600 musicians and singers, followed on successive days by Bryn Terfel in Wagner's The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, and Plácido Domingo in Verdi's Simon Boccanegra. It will be only Domingo's second Proms appearance, and comes months after the Spanish tenor underwent cancer surgery at the age of 69.

Announcing the line-up today, Proms director Roger Wright said he wanted to acknowledge the history of the festival while making it work for the 21st century: “[Proms founder] Henry Wood believed in making the best-quality classical music available to the widest possible audience, and that remains at the heart of the Proms today.”

Admission prices have been frozen for another year, thanks to the BBC's subsidy of nearly £6 million.

Forget the election. We want the Proms manifesto

Two days to go.  Two days until we know what delights are lined up for those balmy summer nights at the Royal Albert Hall. Two days until the phrase ‘BBC Proms’ in the Telegraph blog tag box begins its gradual rise from 4 point to 8 point to complete dominance of the cultural blogosphere by the time we reach the Last Night on September 11th.

The Proms schedule remains a closely guarded secret until it’s launched by controller Roger Wright on Thursday. It’s something of a miracle that the embargo is so respected. Obviously lots of people at the BBC have access to the plans – and being media folk, well, it’s hard to stop the odd titbit slipping out to friends and colleagues. Perhaps that’s why us presenters only get fed oblique details in the run up. “We’d like you to present on a prom on xxth August” goes the conversation. “Great, what’s in it?”. “A major European Orchestra. Brilliant programme”. “Okay then”. That’s usually pretty much all we are trusted with.  Well, I may exaggerate slightly, but suffice it to say my detailed knowledge at this point encompasses about 2 per cent of the total programme.

Booksellers will have had their copies of the Proms Guide delivered several weeks ago – it’s still always a best seller. And while I saw the Guide on sale in two branches of a smart London bookstore at the weekend (tut tut), most seem to play along with the rules. And rightly so – it’s much more fun when we all discover together. Then there are nearly two weeks to make up our minds about what we want to hear before tickets go on sale on May 4th. At that point lies the adventure of ticket application forms, online bookings, passport photos for Prommers passes. It’s probably not the best week for the Royal Albert Hall’s box office manager.

So what’s going to be in this year’s season ?  Can’t tell you even my 2 per cent I’m afraid. It’s not like I’m Mr Chiles with ITV to fall back on. But we could have a fun 48 hours speculating …

Royal Albert Hall (Intro)

The Royal Albert Hall is an arts venue situated in the Knightsbridge area of the City of Westminster, London, England, best known for holding the annual summer Proms concerts since 1941.

The Royal Albert Hall is one of the UK's most treasured and distinctive buildings, recognisable the world over. Since its opening by Queen Victoria in 1871, the world's leading artists from every kind of performance genre have appeared on its stage.

History:In 1851 the Great Exhibition was held in Hyde Park, London, for which the so-called Crystal Palace was built. The exhibition was a great success and led Prince Albert, the Prince Consort, to propose that a permanent series of facilities be built in the area for the enlightenment of the public. Progress on the scheme was slow and in 1861 Prince Albert died, without having seen his ideas come to fruition. However, a memorial was proposed for Hyde Park, with a Great Hall opposite.Once the remaining funds had been raised, in April 1867 Queen Victoria signed the Royal Charter of the Corporation of the Hall of Arts and Sciences which was to operate the Hall and on 20 May, laid the foundation stone.

The Hall was designed by Captain Francis Fowke and Major-General Henry Y.D. Scott of the Royal Engineers and built by Lucas Brothers. The designers were heavily influenced by ancient amphitheaters, but had also been exposed to the ideas of Gottfried Semper while he was working at the South Kensington Museum. The recently opened Cirque d'Hiver in Paris was seen in the contemporary press as the design to outdo. The Hall was constructed mainly of Fareham Red brick, with terra cotta block decoration made by Gibbs and Canning Limited of Tamworth. The dome on top was made of steel and glazed. There was a trial assembly made of the steel framework of the dome in Manchester, then it was taken apart again and transported down to London via horse and cart. When the time came for the supporting structure to be removed from the dome after re-assembly in situ, only volunteers remained on site in case the structure dropped. It did drop - but only by five-eighths of an inch. The Hall was scheduled to be completed by Christmas Day 1870 and the Queen visited a few days beforehand to inspect. She was reported as saying "It looks like the British Constitution".

The Proms is a popular eight-week summer season of daily classical music concerts and other events held annually at the Albert Hall since moving from the Queens Hall in 1941. The event was founded in 1895, and now each season consists of over 70 concerts in the Albert Hall, in addition to a series of events at other venues across the United Kingdom on the last night.

Sharleen Spiteri and Kim Wilde in Charleroi

Saturday April 24, Night of the Proms blows the roof of the RTL Spiroudôme in Charleroi with a prestigious programme. Sharleen Spiteri, the lead singer of Texas, and Kim Wilde are announced for the 7th edition of Night of the Proms in the French speaking part of Belgium. They will perform their greatest hits under the accompaniment of the symphonic orchestra Il Novecento led by Robert Groslot.
Sharleen Spiteri and her band Texas made a spectacular debut with the song “I Don’t Want A Lover”. With a mix of electropop and hiphop Texas scored hits such as “Say What You Want”, “Black Eyed Boy”, “Put Your Arms Around Me”, “Summer Son” and “Inner Smile”. Sharleen Spiteri was a guest at Night of the Proms in Antwerp in 2006.
Kim Wilde is an icon of British pop music from the eighties. She made her debut in 1981 with the new wave classic “Kids In America”. In 1987 she was in the American charts with her version of the song “You Keep Me Hangin ‘On”, originally by The Supremes. Other hits from her are “Cambodia”, “Checkered Love” and “You Came”. Together with the German singer Nena she scored the hit “Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime”. In 2007, Kim Wilde toured with Night of the Proms in Germany.
On April 24 the Night of the Proms-fans in the French speaking part of Belgium will be able to enjoy the music from Sharleen Spiteri and Kim Wilde.
